The historic site of Manggyeongam sits in Bokjeong-dong, Sujeong- gu,
where entire Seoul is seen at a glance. A sitting Yeorae is here in the
carved rockbed. Around the statue of Yeorae are no less than 14 excellent
compositions, all engraved on leveled rock surfaces.
This is where the kings from the late Goryeo Dyansty period to the
early Joseon resided praying for the nation's tranquility and peace. It is said
that King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty built here the altar named
Chilseongdan to pray for his sons, Prince Pyeongwondaegun and Jeandaegun,
and the rituals were called Chilseongje. Later in 1897 during the reign of King
Gojong, Yi Gyu-Seung carved a Buddha statue and built a Buddhist temple here
according to an inscription in this place.
